Dichterliebe - A Descent into Love 10/18
Time & Location
About the Event
We've all likely been there... the dramatic break up of a serious relationship. Dichterliebe is a cherished story told musically by Robert Schumann. It weaves its way through the start of a relationship, all the way through the break-up to the bitter resolve to move on through 16 poignant songs, some less than 40 seconds in length. Sung and played by Jamie Offenbach and Maikaʻi Nash in German on the 18th, and 20th (with surtitles) of October, and in English on the 19th (with surtitles) of October, this song cycle is joined by movement artist, Marcus Quiniones, who visualizes this man's descent into his own psyche.
But..... weʻve never heard her side of the story.
Pōmaika'i Lyman joins HI Arts Lab singing her response to her lover's jabs, all with Hawaiian mele. These 4 inserted songs (with surtitles) have been commissioned by HI Arts Lab and will be the very first Hawaiian language, art-song cycle ever composed. With lyrics by Ānuenue Pūnua and music by Dr. Jace Kaholokula Saplan, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Hawaiʻi @ Mānoa, this project breathes new life into an old standard, and paves the way for a new art form to be born out of our beloved mele.
